02 · Farm info
Peña Redonda · La Palma, Chalatenango, El Salvador · 1,500–1,550 masl · Pacamara · Washed

This coffee comes from Carlos Mauricio Lemus Landaverde, a young producer who inherited his father’s four-hectare farm after Jose Maria Lemus passed away in a car accident. Carlos is carrying forward his father’s and his family’s commitment to quality, and doing it well, taking ninth place in the 2017 El Salvador Cup of Excellence. The farm sits in Chalatenango, the “valley of water and sand”  El Salvador’s coolest and most northerly coffee region. The variety is Pacamara, a striking cross between Pacas and Maragogype developed by the Instituto Salvadoreño de Investigaciones del Café (ISIC), grown here at 1,500 to 1,550 masl and harvested December to March.

03 · The region
Historically, El Salvador’s top coffees came from the west. That changed in 2007, when a Chalatenango Pacamara won the Cup of Excellence and brought both the region and the variety centre stage. Since then, Chalatenango has become a sought-after source of exceptional microlots - Pacamara, Pacas, SL-28, and Gesha among them grown by small producers applying rigorous harvesting and a range of processing techniques. It’s a region that’s become important to specialty coffee as a whole.
